Tenerife tourist officials have long been peering at the state of play in Portugal and have ruefully decided that they deserve a piece of the golf pie. And why not? With average year round temperatures of 22 C and very little rain to speak of, the playing conditions are ideal.
Nine courses currently exist on Tenerife, plus one in La Gomera, with several others at various stages of development.
The most recent additions to the club scene include the magnificently tropical Golf Tecina on the neighbouring island of La Gomera, the Seve Ballesteros-designed Buenavista Golf in Tenerife’s rugged northwest, and Abama Golf providing 18 spectacular holes on Tenerife’s west coast.
Improved ferry facilities have enabled La Gomera in particular to benefit from a golfing crowd predominantly situated on Tenerife. The island can be reached in less than an hour by high-speed ferry from Los Cristianos.
